About Us

Introduction

Biotech-Krishi Innovation Science Application Network (Biotech-KISAN) is a Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India Programme for empowering small and marginal farmers with the support of improved technologies. It aims to find out the constraints face by the farmers in relation to factors of productivity i.e., water, soil, seed & market and to address these problems in localised way with global outlook. This programme assume that there is a need for direct linkage between science laboratories and farms; it is now imperative that the Indian scientist understand the problems of the local farmer and provide solutions to those problems. Likewise, it is necessary to expose farmers to the scientific solutions available by bringing him to the scientific environment/laboratory. This close interaction and need based research will allow innovative solutions and technologies to be developed and applied at farm level.

Salient features

For Farmers : Scientist will work in synergy with the farmers.

By Farmers : Programme will be run with consultation of all categories of farmers.

Empower Women : ThroughMahilaKisan Biotech Fellowship, women farmers will be empowered.

Connects Globally : Farmers are encouraged to adopt best global practices across India. It will connect farmers of 15 agro-climatic zones of India.

Hubs and Spoke: Farmers organization will be connected with different science labs, KVKs, SAUs.

Farmers as Innovators: Grassroots innovations will be documented and escalated.

Communication cell: Communication cell will be setup in each hub for rapid information transfer.

Components of the Programme

The Programme will provide support for following components :

The Hub : The hub will get financial assistance for initially 2 years and on the basis of the review it may extend for additional 3 years.

Partner Institutes : The partner institutes will conduct training for farmers and scientists.

Research projects : If scientists during the course of these programmes identify a problem, which would require larger funding; it would be possible for them to submit the research project proposal to the Programme for additional funding.

International Training : Short-term Training (STT) Programmes will be developed by DBT in partnership with international organisations / universities, where Farmers will be exposed to bestglobal farm management and practices.

Biotech-KISAN Hub at BAU, Sabour

BAU Sabour received Biotech KISHAN Hub Project from Department of Biotechnology Ministry of Science and Technology Government of India in initial phase in the year 2018 for popularising Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) Cultivation in Tal area of Bihar (Patna, Lakhisarai) and Gaya. In the financial year 2018-19, 30 acres farmers’ field was demonstrated with low ODAP content varieties of Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) that is Ratan and Prateek, however this financial year 2019-20, the area under demonstration for improved variety of Lathyrus jump to 200 acres in aforesaid three districts.
After reviewing the performance of the Biotech KISHN Hub Project at BAU, the Department of Biotechnology is pleased to expand its activity in six aspirational districts -Araria, Katihar, Banka, Khagaria, Purnea and Aurangabad for promotion, production and marketing of activities-enterprises-Beekeeping, Tissue Culture Banana, Goatry, Makhana, Mushroom cultivation. This expanded project for aspirational districts was sanctioned December 2019 and it is officially launched in Kishan Mela 2020 organised by BAU Sabour in gracious presence of Dr. Mohd. Aslam Adviser (Scientist’G’) Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govement of India, Prof. Dr. Ajoy Kumar Singh Hon’ble Vice- chancellor BAU Sbour,Smt.
